AS-Level isn't one thing everywhere. In South Africa, New Zealand, and other markets, AS-Level is sat as a complete, final qualification — the result that goes on the university application. There's no second year to "make up for it."
In the UK and similar systems, AS-Level content typically forms the first year of a two-year A-Level. A strong AS year means less time relearning fundamentals under pressure in Year 13.
