Edexcel AS Level Mathematics 8MA0 is a standalone, linear qualification — entirely separate from the A-Level's 9MA0 code, sat in a single series, and built from just two papers. This page covers both papers, current grade thresholds, and exactly how our workshops are mapped to your specification.
Edexcel mark schemes for 8MA0 reward specific, demonstrated working — not just a correct final answer. Students who understand the content but have not been taught how Edexcel marks a solution consistently lose marks on:
Paper 2 blends Statistics & Mechanics into a single 60-mark paper — students who under-revise either half because it feels like "less" than a dedicated paper consistently underperform on it.
"Hence," "Show that," "Prove" and "Given that" each carry a specific instruction in Edexcel mark schemes. A student who solves the mathematics correctly but ignores the command word can still lose marks already earned.
Mechanics questions frequently require a stated modelling assumption (e.g. "the particle is modelled as a point mass") — Edexcel examiner reports repeatedly note marks lost for omitting this even when the calculation is correct.
Paper 1 carries 62.5% of the AS at 100 marks; Paper 2 carries 37.5% at 60 marks. Students who don't calibrate their revision time to this split often over-prepare the smaller paper.

Grade thresholds vary by session based on paper difficulty and cohort performance. AS Level is graded A to E only — there is no A* at AS for Edexcel.

An A required 108/160 — 67.5% of available marks. With both papers compulsory and unevenly weighted, the margin for losing marks on the smaller Paper 2 is tighter than it first appears.
Edexcel mark schemes attach specific meaning to command words. Misreading one of these costs marks the student's mathematics had already earned.
