Edexcel AS Level Physics 8PH0

Examiner-informed workshops. Not more content — exam mastery.

Edexcel AS Level Physics 8PH0 is built from two equally-weighted papers — Core Physics I and II — with different names from the A-Level's "Advanced Physics I/II/III" structure. This page covers both papers, current grade thresholds, and exactly how our workshops are mapped to your specification.

Why Strong Students Still Miss A

It is rarely the
physics.

Edexcel mark schemes for 8PH0 reward precise scientific language and method, not just a correct numerical answer. Students who understand the physics but have not been taught how Edexcel marks a solution consistently lose marks on:

Imprecise definitions and units

Edexcel mark schemes require exact definitions and consistent SI units — an almost-right definition often scores zero, even when the underlying understanding is clearly present.

Misreading command words

"State," "Explain," "Calculate" and "Sketch" each carry a specific instruction in Edexcel mark schemes. A student who understands the physics but ignores the command word can still lose marks already earned.

Practical skills synoptic questions

Edexcel weaves practical skills and data analysis into both Core Physics papers rather than isolating them in a separate paper — students who haven't drilled this integrated format consistently underperform.

Time allocation across two equally-weighted papers

With both papers at 80 marks and 50% each, students who don't pace consistently across both run out of time on whichever paper comes second.

Our workshops are built from these patterns — not from the textbook.

How Our Workshops Work

Examiner intelligence.
Peer learning. 60 minutes.

Every 8PH0 workshop follows the same structure: the examiner's pattern for that paper is deconstructed first (Anatomy), then solved live with the mark scheme revealed at each stage (Drill), then you attempt it yourself with peer comparison (Close), then your own questions are answered (Open Forum). 87% of students report that seeing a peer's different approach revealed a method they had never considered.

Examination Structure

8PH0 AS — Two Equal
Core Papers.

Edexcel AS Physics 8PH0 candidates take two equally-weighted papers, named differently from the A-Level's three "Advanced Physics" papers. There are no optional topics at AS — the five A-Level options (Astrophysics, Medical Physics, Engineering Physics, Turning Points, Electronics) appear only at full A-Level.

PaperTitleMarksWeightingKey Topics
P1Core Physics I8050%Working as a physicist, mechanics, materials, waves & particle nature of light, electric circuits
P2Core Physics II8050%Further mechanics, electricity, further waves, synoptic and data analysis questions across the AS content

160 marks total. Both papers compulsory — no optional topics at AS. Source: Pearson Edexcel published specification.

Grade Boundaries

What an A actually
requires.

Grade thresholds vary by session based on paper difficulty and cohort performance. AS Level is graded A to E only — there is no A* at AS for Edexcel.

Out of 160. Source: Pearson Edexcel published grade boundary tables, June 2025 series. Always verify current thresholds at qualifications.pearson.com — boundaries are set after each series and change every Masterclass.

An A required 102/160 — 64% of available marks. With no option choice to navigate, consistent technique across both equally-weighted papers is what separates grade boundaries here.

Command Word Mastery

What Edexcel
Examiners Reward.

Edexcel mark schemes attach precise meaning to command words in Physics — a "State" answer with the wrong units scores zero regardless of the value given.

Command WordWhat It DemandsCommon Student ErrorWorkshop Fix
StateA concise answer with no supporting argument, but with correct units where applicableOmitting units, or adding unnecessary working that risks contradicting a correct initial answerDrill phase: rapid-fire "State" questions scored strictly on unit precision
ExplainA reasoned account using physics principles — not a description of what happens, but whyDescribing the observation without explaining the underlying physical causeAnatomy phase: "describe vs explain" comparison using past Core Physics mark schemes
CalculateUse given data to compute a numerical answer, showing method, with correct units and significant figuresRounding too early in multi-step calculations, propagating small errors into the final answerClose phase: peer-compared significant-figure discipline drills
SketchA graph showing the correct general shape and key features (intercepts, gradients, asymptotes) — not measured precisionEither over-investing time on a precise plot, or omitting a key labelled feature the mark scheme requiresOpen Forum: live sketch-and-critique exercises against the mark scheme's expected shape
Your Facilitator

Sat 8PH0.
In the room you'll be in.

8PH0 facilitation is led by team members who have sat this exact specification — not generic tutors working from a textbook.

Facilitator Matching

Our facilitators are current and former exam board markers. Rather than displaying a generic pool, we match the right facilitator to your specific board, subject, year group, and cohort profile — after an introductory conversation. Start with a free trial →

Frequently Asked

Edexcel 8PH0 AS — Common Questions

How many papers does Edexcel AS Physics 8PH0 have?
Two equally-weighted papers: Core Physics I and Core Physics II, each 80 marks and 50% of the AS. Both are compulsory.
Are there optional topics at AS, like at A-Level?
No. The five A-Level options (Astrophysics, Medical Physics, Engineering Physics, Turning Points in Physics, Electronics) do not appear at AS — both papers cover the same compulsory core content.
Is Edexcel 8PH0 hard?
8PH0 is demanding but fair. The physics is comparable to other boards' AS specifications — the difficulty most students underestimate is precise scientific language and the integrated practical-skills questions.
Is this tutoring?
No. A private tutor teaches one Candidate the subject. Our Masterclasses bring up to 15 Candidates into a single Masterclass, facilitated by someone focused on what the Edexcel examiner rewards.
How are practical skills assessed at AS?
Edexcel integrates practical skills and data analysis questions directly into Core Physics I and II rather than using a separate practical paper. Our workshops drill this integrated format specifically.
What if I miss a live workshop?
Every Masterclass is recorded and available within 1 hour of the Masterclass ending. Recordings remain accessible for the duration of your subscription.
